Sur-Kshetra: Aslam and Reshammiya set for a battle

Sur-Kshetra: Aslam and Reshammiya set for a battle

Pop sensation Atif Aslam will soon start shooting for a three-month long musical reality TV show “Sur-Kshetra”, in which he will be leading Pakistani singers while Indian singer Himesh Reshammiya will be leading the Indian side, reportskoolmuzone.com. They are also going to judge the show. The show will be shot in Dubai and will most likely go on air early next year.
“Sur-Kshetra” will be broadcast on Sahara One and will provide a platform for upcoming singers from India and Pakistan to showcase their talents, reports rediff.com.
When asked, how “Sur-Kshetra” will be different from other reality shows, Aslam replied; “This show is different because artists from both Pakistan and India are going to share the same platform. There will be a lot of cultural exchange and the Indian audience will come to know about Pakistani culture.”
Additionally, the artist also said that he will try to introduce contemporary music in the show. “A lot of singers have tried it in Bollywood and other shows, but I would like to present it in its true form and in a different manner.”
Apart from this show, Aslam will also be jamming with ex-members of American rock band, Guns N’ Roses, for the “Coke Studio” sessions. However, it’s still not certain whether he will perform for the Pakistani version of the show or the Indian. In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, the singer-cum-actor said that he “will also be performing with a couple of popular Rajasthani folk artists,” which indicates that he will be performing on “Coke Studio @ MTV”, reports koolmuzone.com.
The singer, who also acted in Shoaib Mansoor’s latest film Bol, said that he loves the concept of “Coke Studio” and it was hard for him to say “no” to it. “I’m looking forward to the session, it’s been a dream of sorts. On ‘Coke Studio’, we get a chance to play different genres of music with different artists. I love the concept of the show — I just couldn’t say no.”

We'd only buy top quality, says Man Utd boss Ferguson

We'd only buy top quality, says Man Utd boss Ferguson

Ferguson is confident his squad can cope with their current injuries
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson insists he is not prepared to buy in the January transfer window unless a top player becomes available.
Ferguson, 69, has seen his squad beset by injuries, with winger Ashley Young the latest casualty.
But Ferguson said: "I am perfectly happy with the strength of our squad in terms of depth, quality and age range.
"I will not be swayed by endless tweets and blogs urging the club to get busy in the transfer market next month."
Although Phil Jones is set to be fit for the Boxing Day clash with Wigan, Young (knee) is on an injury list that includes the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Anderson, Michael Owen and Tom Cleverley, while Darren Fletcher is also sidelined with a bowel condition.
United have made forays into the January market before - most notably signing Louis Saha, Vidic and Patrice Evra - but Ferguson is confident his squad can cope.
Writing in his programme notes for the Wigan game, Ferguson said: "As far as I am concerned I am marching perfectly in step, true to my beliefs and principles.
"While recruiting some of the world's leading players can lift you into contention for honours, it doesn't necessarily take you all the way, as I hope we will be able to demonstrate before the end of the season as other factors come into play.
"You can never say never in football, of course, because fortunes can fluctuate wildly - that's the football world.
"If a really top-class player became available, then we would go for him, or if we picked up any further serious injuries, it might be important to add to our squad."

South Africa aim to seal overdue series win

South Africa Aim To Seal OverDue Series Win
Ashwell Prince

South Africa and Sri Lanka both have the opportunity to put an end to unwanted records when they clash in the second test at Kingsmead in Durban on Monday.

The hosts have not won a home series since they beat Bangladesh 2-0 in 2008 while they have lost three consecutive tests at Kingsmead.

Sri Lanka have suffered a wretched run of form in test cricket and have not won in 15 matches with their last victory coming against India in Galle in July 2010 in what was to be off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan's last test match.

The Proteas will take a lot of confidence into the second test after securing a thumping innings and 81-run victory in the first test and the home side will be anxious to nail down the series before the third and final test in Cape Town.

South Africa batsman Ashwell Prince said that complacency may have been the reason for the Proteas' recent inability to win home series.

"We've had a few opportunities in the last few series to put them away and for some reason or other we haven't been able to do that. Perhaps there has been a bit of complacency when we have been in good positions," Prince told a news conference.

"But we have another opportunity and hopefully we can kill it off before we go to Newlands," he added.

South Africa's vice-captain AB de Villiers said that the Proteas poor record at Kingsmead is something that the team are well aware of and will be doing utmost to rectify.

"We haven't been playing good cricket here (Kingsmead) of late. We want to turn that around and win a few games here, and win this test match. It's something that we have talked about," said De Villiers.

Sri Lanka batsman Kumar Sangakkara felt that his team could draw confidence from South Africa's poor record at Kingsmead.

"Every test is an opportunity for us to change things around and we need to change it around now," said Sangakkara.

"Losing, like winning, can become a habit. For us to go into this test match, knowing that South Africa doesn't have a great record here, is good but it us up to us to deliver."

Sri Lanka endured a miserable time with the bat in the first test in Centurion, being shot out for 180 and 150 in their two innings, and talk out of the tourists' camp is that wicketkeeper/batsman Dinesh Chandimal will make his test debut in Durban in place of Causal Silva.

The 22-year-old Chandimal has played in 17 one-day internationals and has scored two centuries in that format, including a match-winning 105 not out against England at Lord's in July this year.

"I think he is one of the fine youngsters that we have found over the last few years," Sri Lanka's captain Tillakaratne Dilshan said.

"We have discussed giving him a test debut and he can gain some valuable experience by playing against South Africa's attack. Personally I think he is good for the team and he can be groomed for the future."

The visitors took a physical and mental battering during their heavy defeat at Centurion and Sangakkara said that it was vital that he and his team mates were in the right mental state for the second test.

"The difference between the best performing teams and the ones chasing them is probably the mental side of things. It is not skill or technique but being tough when the pressure is on," he said.

Don 2: Do not expect too much

Don 2: Do not Expect Too Much

It’s been a while since Bollywood dished out a slick, fast-paced action film. Wait, who am I kidding? Bollywood doesn’t do fast-paced action films any more, we just turn to Hollywood to get our share of those. So kudos to Farhan Akhtar that he thought of attempting it — not once but twice.

While the first was a remake of the 70s hit “Don”, the sequel is an entirely new story, and doesn’t have too many connections with the previous film, except for some of the characters who make a comeback.

We are introduced to Don (Shah Rukh Khan), five years after he escaped from the clutches of police — with longer hair and the entire Asian drug trade at his command. When he decides to move his trade to Europe, drug lords there decide that Don is better off dead. To escape from their clutches, and hoping to stay safe in prison, Don surrenders to Interpol officer Roma (Priyanka Chopra), who till 5 years ago, was part of his gang. How she makes that switch, we are never told.

Inexplicably, the minute he gets inside prison, Don makes a plan to escape. If all he wanted to do was escape immediately, why surrender in the first place? And that’s the first of the plot holes. Unfortunately, Akhtar makes no attempt to plug any of these holes — they only grow larger as the film progresses.

Don escapes with Vardhan (Boman Irani) and plans for a daring heist in Berlin with Roma hot on his trail.

Akhtar channels his inner Steven Soderbergh and a lot of the plot sounds similar to “Ocean’s Eleven”. However, what’s missing from this action film is some pace. If an action film begins to drag and you lose interest in the plot halfway, you know something’s wrong. By the time the climax rolls around and shows no sign of ending, you are squirming in your seat. In the last ten minutes, I had no idea why the characters were doing what they were doing.

There are plot holes the size of craters. The Interpol is shown to be as clueless as the audience, which I refuse to believe. On the plus side, the film is packaged very well and there are some sequences which make sure you are on the edge of your seat, especially the car chase sequence through the streets of Berlin.

Of the cast, Priyanka Chopra needs to do something about that accent of hers. She comes across as affected and artificial, and brings nothing to her character. Boman Irani makes all kinds of weird expressions and hams it up like there’s no tomorrow.

The best thing about “Don 2? is Shah Rukh Khan — his swagger, the flick of the cigarette, the smirk — he embodies Don and his character, even better than he did in the previous film. He is very good in the action sequences as well, and when he is on screen, you don’t mind the other stuff as much.

This is not a film that will stay in your mind for long, but it’s worth a one-time watch, for Khan and for some slickly shot action sequences. Don’t go looking for anything else.

Indian Muslim body issues fatwa against Veena

The All India Muslim Tyohar Committee on Wednesday issued a fatwa against Pakistani actress Veena Malik over her "objectionable" photos on net and for degrading the sacred institution of 'nikah' by signing a contract to choose a groom on a reality show.

"We were getting complaints that the actions of this Pakistani actor were sending a wrong message to our teens, especially girls," said A S Khurram, chairman of the Majlis-e-Shura.

I did not sleep with anyone: Preity Zinta

Preity Zinta who will come face-to-face with her biggest hater Chirag Mahabal. The hater criticised Zinta saying she got involved in the IPL because her film career wasn't going anywhere. He also said that the involvement of Bollywood celebrities has made showbiz out of IPL.

In her defense, she said, "I've learnt to be passionate about cricket. I never knew anything about it before. The IPL cricket was launched before the big recession. It's my hard-earned money that I put in my team. I did not scam anyone; I did not sleep with anyone.

The hater claimed that Preity has only played bubbly characters in her films. To this Zinta said, "I'm bubbly but I'm still a person with enough substance. I can be a big 'sadu' and extremely depressed. I played bubbly roles because my producers found me appropriate for that."

Later, things got so heated up, that the hater suffered an asthma attack. What annoyed PZ so much? Find out on "Love 2 Hate U" this Sunday.

Imran Khan Jalsa in Karachi 25 december

Imran Khan Jalsa in Karachi 25 december

KARACHI: Addressing a mammoth crowd at the Quaid’s Mausoleum, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaaf Chief Imran Khan signaled that his party’s tsunami was reaching new heights, on its way to fulfilling his dream of forming the government.
“When I saw Tsunami in Lahore, I thought to myself it will be very difficult to top this. But today, I congratulate the people of Karachi, because they beat the [October 30] rally,” Imran said. He chanted the names of all of Pakistan’s major ethnicities as people from those groups responded. Mentioning religious minorities, he wished a merry Christmas to the Christians of Pakistan.
The PTI Chairman said a special welcome to a man he introduced as Zulfiqar Ali who had come all the way from Dera Ghazi Khan to attend the rally. “He financed his trip by selling his mobile phone!”
“I welcome Javed Hashmi to PTI. The one thing I truly admire about him is his bravery. I welcome Shah Mahmood Qureshi again,” he said. He then made the announcement that former foreign minister Sardar Asif Ali has said that he will be joining the PTI.
“The Quaid wanted Pakistan to be an Islamic welfare state, and I will make it into one,” Khan said. He said that it was at the age of 18 when he first went to Britain and understood what a welfare state is.
“I was surprised to see that every person, rich or poor, was given a free education that would enable him or her to even become the prime minister of Britain,” he said. “This is my dream: A Pakistan where every human being is valued.”
“The first thing we want to create is a just legal system in the country. We want courts that do not discriminate. We will take justice to the grassroots, to the rural areas and include everyone in the system,” Imran said. “We will provide everyone justice for free.”
“This is my promise to you: I will bring forth for you a team the likes of which this country has never seen,” Imran said. “What will this team do? Under Jahangir Tarin, this team will present policy papers on every issue twice a month. We will present policies on agriculture, transport, local government, and foreign affairs. We will present to you how Pakistan will become an independent nation.”
And most importantly, PTI will present a tax plan that will ensure that this country never has to beg for money from anybody, he said. “We will create a police force independent of political influence, based purely on merit. When I am in government, one day they will even stop Imran Khan’s own car for over speeding.”
Announcing his support for Balochistan, he said that the next stop of his ‘tsunami’ will be Quetta on March 23, 2012. “My Balochi brothers, I ask you for forgiveness on behalf of Pakistanis. We have been unjust to you. We did to you what we did to East Pakistanis. We have kept you as a colony.”
When PTI is in power, we will use the model of West and East Germany, he said. “West Germany gave East Germany special status and diverted all development to thast area. We will develop Balochistan. We will come to you, embrace you, ask for your forgiveness, and address all your grievances,” he said.
The PTI Chairman did not raise criticism against the MQM in his speech.
End of live updates
8:48pm
PTI Chief Imran Khan addresses the rally.
“When I saw Tsunami in Lahore, I thought to myself it will be very difficult to top this. But today, I congratulate the people of Karachi, because they beat the [October 30] rally,” Imran says. He chanted the names of all of Pakistan’s major ethnicities as people from those groups responded. Mentioning religious minorities, he wished a merry Christmas to the Christians of Pakistan.
He said a special welcome to a man he introduced as Zulfiqar Ali who had come all the way from Dera Ghazi Khan to attend the rally.
08:00pm
Qureshi says that when he was the foreign minister of Pakistan, he expressed opinions against the US-India civil nuclear deal. However, he says President Zardari sent out a message that Pakistan will not go against any such nuclear deal.
Qureshi says that a nuclear deal between US and India severely undermines Pakistan.
If Pakistan ever signs “no first strike” agreement with India, its nuclear assets will be wasted and worthless, Qureshi says.
He “accuses” President Zardari of ruining the deterrent value of Pakistan’s nuclear program by saying ‘no first strike’ on India.
The PTI vice chairman assures the people that Pakistan’s nuclear assets are physically safe but are threatened by such “evil” decisions and such people.
Clarifying PTI’s stand on India, Qureshi says that his party wants friendship with everyone, with the US and India. But it would not tolerate slave-master relations.
“We want friendship and not slavery,” says Qureshi.
“If you want to see this country as an independent country, then vote for a leadership that has the guts to take bold stand on all such decisions,” Qureshi says.
7:44pm
Shah Mahmood Qureshi addresses the jalsa.
“Today, PIA, Wapda and all other institutions of the country are failing continuously but all these things can improve if the people of Pakistan decide to vote for a leadership that can bring about that change,” Qureshi says.
He said that all these failures are a result of incompetence and corruption. There are five things that everyone has agreed upon: “Firstly, democracy. Everyone wants democracy and no one is conspiring against the government. Prime Minister Gilani, it is your corruption that is a conspiracy against your own government. Secondly, justice. If you want justice in the country, vote for the PTI. The party will ensure that justice prevails. Thirdly, an independent judiciary. The present set-up has buried the concept of necessity. Fourth, free media which will promote accountability and democratic values. And lastly, Pakistan’s nuclear programme. Ensuring its security is something everyone agrees on. Would you let anyone trade our nuclear capability?” Qureshi said.
He said that as a former foreign minister of Pakistan, he knows that this programme protects Pakistan from outside threat. “Pakistan’s nuclear programme is under a five-layered security system and is of international standards. But then you wonder what the threat is about? There is no physical threat but there is a threat from certain people.”
People scream Zardari’s name. “Everyone said my comments [about Zardari] were irresponsible but I still stand by my comments,” Qureshi says.
7:26pm
“Go Zardari Go” trends worldwide on Twitter.
Chants of “Go Zardari Go” as Shah Mahmood Qureshi takes the stage.
“Now that Karachi has woken up, it is as if Pakistan has awaken from its slumber. I congratulate the people of Karachi for attending this historic gathering. Our mission was to heal the bruises of Karachi and unite Karachiites and today’s rally has done that,” he said.
Quaid, you provided us with a country that we have failed to protect, but today we have gathered to protect this country, Qureshi said. “Everyone can see that things are changing. I can see people smiling. I can see their eyes shining.”
“Pakistan is under threat because of our own weaknesses. No one from outside will come to help us, we have to mend things ourselves,” he said.
7:19pm
Javed Hashmi addresses the rally, amid shouts of “Ek Bahadur Aadmi, Hashmi, Hashmi”.
“We have gathered here for peace. This gathering, made up of the young generation of Pakistan, is the harbinger of a revolution,” the former PML-N stalwart said. “Today is the birthday of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. When he made this country, he wanted to ensure justice for Muslims of the subcontinent. Justice was his slogan and movement for justice is Imran’s slogan. This is why we have come forward to provide justice. It is the youth of this country who will achieve that.”
Talking about his former party, Hashmi said that PML-N workers also want Pakistan to prosper and progress. “I love those workers and my former party but I love the people of Pakistan more than that and that is why I have come here.”
Hashmi, who joined the PTI earlier this week, said that when he was considering joining the PTI, he was humbled by Imran Khan’s invitation. “For the first time, a leader said to me that I have never gone to ask anyone to join the party but I have come to you and not for myself but for Pakistan. How could I say no to that?”
For years, I was alone in demanding that leaders declare their assets. Now this is Imran’s voice and I would like to him that I will not back off [from my support of him], he said.
Addressing the people, he said, “Now, I hand you my 40 years of hard work. No one can raise questions over financial, social and political matters throughout my career or doubt my dedication to this country.”
7:05pm
Light grid on the right side of the stage (if your back is towards it) just fell forward. A group of people is standing there.
